Job Summary
Our client is seeking a dedicated Behavioral Health Registered Nurse with a strong background in medical coding, particularly within home health. This role involves comprehensive responsibilities related to ICD-10 assignment, ensuring documentation accuracy and compliance with CMS guidelines, and supporting billing operations. The ideal candidate will leverage their expertise to collaborate with clinical staff, resolve coding discrepancies, and contribute to quality assurance and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze clinical documentation to assign appropriate ICD-10 codes for home health episodes.
- Ensure coding reflects accurate primary and secondary diagnoses and comorbidities while aligning with OASIS assessments.
- Validate that documentation supports medical necessity and meets payer-specific requirements.
- Collaborate with clinicians to clarify documentation and resolve coding discrepancies.
- Maintain coding compliance with CMS guidelines, including Patient-Driven Groupings Model (PDGM) standards.
- Support the billing team by ensuring timely and accurate coding for claim submission.
- Utilize Home Care Home Base (HCHB) and Strategic Health Partners (SHP) to manage coding workflows and documentation.
- Assist in resolving coding-related claim denials and participate in appeals when necessary.
- Communicate proactively with clinical staff regarding documentation and coding needs.
- Participate in internal audits and quality reviews to ensure coding accuracy and regulatory compliance.
- Identify trends in documentation or coding errors and recommend corrective actions.
- Stay current with ICD-10 updates, CMS regulations, and industry best practices.
- Maintain HIPAA compliance and strict confidentiality of patient information.
- Assist in training new staff on coding protocols and documentation standards.
Qualifications
- Active certified coding credential required (e.g., CCS, CPC, or HCS-D).
- Minimum of 2 years of medical coding experience required.
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of medical coding experience (home health coding experience is strongly preferred).
- Experience with Home Care Home Base (HCHB) is required or highly preferred.
Skills
- Proficiency in ICD-10 coding.
- Familiarity with OASIS assessments.
- Understanding of CMS guidelines and Patient-Driven Groupings Model (PDGM) standards.
- Experience with Home Care Home Base (HCHB) and Strategic Health Partners (SHP).
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to perform internal audits and quality reviews.
- Knowledge of HIPAA compliance.
