Job Summary
Our client is seeking a Patient Financial Counselor responsible for identifying and screening hospital patients who may qualify for State, County, or Federal financial assistance programs. The role involves conducting in-person screenings, assisting patients with the application process, documenting all activity accurately, and maintaining communication regarding application status.
Key Responsibilities
- Review hospital census reports and referral sources to identify patients who may qualify for financial assistance.
- Conduct eligibility screenings for assistance programs.
- Complete face-to-face screenings with patients at the bedside or in the Emergency Room when possible.
- Initiate and assist with eligibility applications for appropriate assistance programs or agencies.
- Introduce patients to available services and explain ongoing support during the eligibility process.
- Coordinate transitions to ensure continuity of service and a positive patient experience.
- Review hospital systems for available patient and account information.
- Contact patients by telephone when an in-person screening cannot be completed.
- Document screening results, patient information, referrals, and application status.
- Identify self-pay accounts and update accounts with accepted assistance programs.
- Conduct field-based activities, including home visits, when required.
- Provide updates and reports regarding screening activity and patient status.
- Maintain confidentiality and protect patient information per privacy and data security requirements.
- Meet established productivity, quality, and performance benchmarks.
- Comply with all applicable laws, regulatory requirements, and security policies.
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
- 1–3 years of experience in medical billing, coding, healthcare eligibility, or a related field preferred.
- Experience in customer service or patient-facing environments preferred.
- Basic computer proficiency and ability to navigate multiple systems.
- Ability to clearly explain financial and eligibility information to patients.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Demonstrated empathy when working with patients with financial challenges.
- Ability to manage multiple accounts and inquiries efficiently.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced hospital environment.
Additional Requirements
- Schedule: Monday to Friday, 11am-7:30pm.
