Job Summary
The Medical Assistant at our client's Colorectal Surgery Clinic plays a pivotal role in supporting colorectal surgeons and advanced practice providers. This position involves delivering high-quality clinical and administrative assistance, preparing patients for exams and procedures, and ensuring seamless clinic operations while prioritizing patient comfort and confidentiality.
Key Responsibilities
- Room patients and obtain vital signs, height, weight, and medical history.
- Review and update medications, allergies, and health history in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Prepare patients for colorectal examinations, anoscopies, and minor in-office procedures.
- Assist physicians and advanced practice providers during examinations and procedures using sterile technique.
- Set up, clean, and stock procedure rooms before and after patient visits.
- Perform specimen collection, labeling, and preparation for laboratory testing.
- Administer injections, vaccines, and medications as permitted by state law and clinic policy.
- Remove sutures, change dressings, and provide basic wound care under provider direction.
- Perform EKGs, point-of-care testing, and other clinical tasks as assigned.
- Educate patients on bowel preparation, post-procedure care, medications, wound care, and follow-up instructions.
- Monitor patients before and after procedures and report changes in condition to the provider.
- Document patient information accurately in the EMR.
- Coordinate referrals, imaging, laboratory testing, and specialty consultations.
- Schedule follow-up appointments, procedures, and surgeries.
- Obtain prior authorizations when needed.
- Respond to patient phone calls and electronic messages regarding clinical questions.
- Maintain accurate medical records while adhering to HIPAA regulations.
- Assist with inventory management and order clinical supplies.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.
- Current CMA, RMA, CCMA, or NCMA certification preferred.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred.
- Previous experience in a surgical or specialty clinic preferred.
- Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) systems.
Experience
- 2+ years of experience in a related field.
- Experience in high volume clinic settings.
Skills
- Knowledge of medical terminology, infection control, and sterile technique.
- Strong understanding of patient privacy and HIPAA regulations.
- Excellent communication and patient education skills.
- Ability to maintain professionalism when discussing sensitive gastrointestinal and colorectal conditions.
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities in a fast-paced clinic.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with providers and clinical staff.
- Compassionate, patient-centered approach with excellent customer service skills.
