Job Summary
The Peer Support Specialist will operate in a role similar to a Case Manager, primarily utilizing personal lived experiences to mentor, guide, and support veterans. The position involves a collaborative, strengths-based approach to peer-to-peer mentoring to empower individuals toward stability and self-sufficiency.
Responsibilities / Job Duties
- Provide direct peer-to-peer mentoring, fostering hope and accountability while working with Case Managers to achieve client goals.
- Screen incoming participants and connect them to necessary community services using the Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) database.
- Coordinate service referrals and assist in navigating support systems using Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) programs.
- Communicate with veterans to assess food and nutritional needs, perform physical tasks such as breaking down boxes, and weigh inventory.
- Conduct check-ins with participants regarding their housing situations and stability, providing on-site support and referrals.
- Navigate across a multi-building campus environment comfortably, traveling between different locations within a one-mile radius.
Minimum Education and Experience Qualification Requirements
Qualifications
- Must possess a valid California Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist Certification or be actively enrolled in required core competency classes.
- Provide a Certificate of Completion for the mandatory 80-hour CalMHSA-approved training.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and affiliated office productivity programs.
- Minimum of one year of experience in social services or a closely related field is preferred.
- Being a Veteran of the U.S. Military or having military-related family members is highly preferred.
- Prior experience working directly with unhoused individuals and/or the Veteran population is strongly preferred.
- Possess personal lived experience regarding mental health recovery, substance use recovery, or navigating housing instability.
Schedule / Shift
If Peer Support Certified:
- Three days a week: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
- Two days a week: 11:00 AM - 7:30 PM
If NOT Peer Support Certified:
- Five days a week: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
