Job Summary
Our client is seeking a dedicated Coding Manager to oversee the daily operations of the Health Information Management Department. The role involves ensuring efficiency and accuracy in processing hospital and clinic patient records, and compliance with legal and regulatory standards. The Coding Manager will lead teams and collaborate with various healthcare professionals to achieve high-quality, cost-efficient care while optimizing reimbursement.
Responsibilities / Job Duties
- Ensures appropriate staffing for all shifts of the HIM department.
- Maintains a scorecard of key responsibilities and accountabilities and tracks regularly.
- Interviews, selects, and evaluates personnel for open positions and manages employee performance.
- Annually reviews policies and procedures, participates in the budgetary process.
- Participates in education and quality assurance programs for the HIM Department.
- Supervises discharge processing activities, record retrieval, and archiving of medical records.
- Ensures compliance with State Vital Records Standards for birth certificate registration.
- Monitors medical records retention in compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Oversees the Release of Information team according to HIPAA privacy standards.
- Supervises all coding and abstracting activities, ensuring compliance with CMS guidelines.
- Manages facility documentation retention plan.
- Responds to coding-related inquiries and assists with data retrieval projects.
- Serves as primary contact with Document Imaging Services vendor.
- Assists with Medical Record Committee activities and performs other duties as needed.
Minimum Education and Experience Qualification Requirements
Education
- Baccalaureate or Associate Arts degree in Health Information Management preferred.
Qualifications
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) with active membership in the American Health Information Management Association required.
- Active membership with American Health Information Management and California Health Information Association.
- Must successfully complete and maintain LA City Fire Card certification within the first 30 days of employment.
Experience
- Minimum five (5) years supervisory experience in medical records and coding utilizing ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding classification systems required.
- Expertise in healthcare compliance, privacy, and security regulations.
- Experience with electronic health records and health information systems.
Skills
- Knowledge of medical record administration and regulations in acute care hospitals.
