Responsibilities

Collects blood and other laboratory specimens from patients following established procedures and physician orders. Ensures necessary pre-authorizations and patient consent forms (ABN) are completed prior to performing tests that have limited coverage.

Provides support during specialized procedures such as bone marrow collections when needed.

Adheres to laboratory protocols for specimen handling, processing, testing, reporting, and documentation of patient results.

Conducts testing and analysis on specimens within Chemistry, Hematology, and Immunology disciplines.

Operates and maintains laboratory instruments, performing required daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance as specified by manufacturer and lab policy.

Follows quality control standards; documents all quality checks, calibrations, and maintenance activities. Accurately records reagent, calibrator, and control lot numbers.

Participates in proficiency testing programs, analyzing samples and reporting results as required (at least annually).

Prepares and evaluates peripheral blood smears, performing WBC differentials on both normal and abnormal samples.

Performs microscopic analysis of urinary sediment and accurately records findings.

Enters and verifies test results in laboratory information systems and maintains necessary files and records. Prepares and processes specimens for referral and send-out testing.

Responds appropriately when test results fall outside established performance standards; identifies potential issues, corrects them, or escalates to a supervisor. Documents all corrective actions taken.

Maintains documentation as required by the laboratory’s quality assurance program, including accession logs, test reports, QC records, and equipment logs. Verifies and documents all critical results and follow-up actions.

Monitors supply levels, ensuring adequate stock of reagents and materials. Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains when required. Restocks work areas as needed.

Coordinates shipment of specimens to reference laboratories for tests not performed internally.

Processes both internal and external lab orders and results for charting. Ensures timely and accurate result entry into patient charts.

Properly identifies patients for transfusion services and handles blood product specimens according to established blood bank policies.

Provides training and guidance to new or existing laboratory personnel.

Serves as the primary operator for designated laboratory instruments and assists in instrument validation and new method development.

Acts as a technical resource and contributes to the evaluation and implementation of new procedures or equipment.

May oversee daily lab operations in the supervisor’s absence, ensuring workflow continuity and compliance.

Maintains compliance with OSHA regulations, safety standards, and universal precautions. Properly disposes of biohazardous and chemical waste.

Keeps the laboratory environment clean, organized, and in compliance with regulatory standards.

Protects patient and staff confidentiality at all times.

Performs moderate- and high-complexity testing under minimal supervision in accordance with CLIA requirements.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field required.

ASCP, AMT, or equivalent national certification strongly preferred.

State licensure as required by applicable regulations.

Minimum of three (3) years of clinical laboratory experience preferred.

Must meet educational and licensure standards required for performing moderate- and high-complexity testing under CLIA.

Candidates grandfathered under previous licensure rules will also be considered.
