Position: Veterinary Technician II – Preclinical Research
Contract: Contract-to-hire, full-time.
Description:
The Veterinary Technician II supports preclinical research operations by providing high-quality animal care, technical procedures, and clinical support under the guidance of veterinarians. This role is hands-on and involves working primarily with non-human primates (NHPs). Responsibilities include animal handling and restraint, diagnostics, medication administration, assisting with surgical procedures, and ensuring compliance with GLP standards. Veterinary Technicians play a critical role in maintaining animal health and welfare while contributing to early-phase drug development studies.
Overview:

Provide nursing care and treatments for medical cases under veterinarian supervision.

Perform diagnostics and screenings (blood collection, urinalysis, fecal exams, Tb testing, malarial screens, etc.).

Assist with animal handling, restraint, sedation, anesthesia, and post-operative care.

Administer medications via IM, SQ, topical, and PO routes.

Support surgical procedures including preparation, wound care, and anesthesia monitoring.

Perform dose calculations and documentation in compliance with GLP.

Maintain and prep veterinary instruments, equipment, and supplies.

Participate in animal welfare programs, including preventive care and enrichment.

Communicate effectively with veterinarians, scientists, and technical staff.

Follow SOPs, safety guidelines, and maintain accurate medical records.
Schedule/Shift:
-
Training: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM for the first 6–9 weeks.

After training: Sunday–Thursday or Tuesday–Saturday. Start times range between 7:00–8:30 AM depending on team needs.
Must-Have Qualifications:

2–5 years of veterinary technician experience (emergency, exotic, or research preferred).

Skilled in blood draws, catheter placement, anesthesia/sedation, surgical prep, and medication administration.

Comfortable handling non-human primates (NHPs) and working in a high-volume research setting.

Ability to lift/push/pull up to 55 lbs.

Computer savvy with strong documentation skills (GLP compliance).

Nice-to-Have Qualifications:

LVT, CVT, RVT, or AALAS certification (ALAT, LAT, LATG).

Experience with lab animal research or CRO environments.
