Job Summary
The Phlebotomist is responsible for drawing, collecting, and processing specimens while providing customer service, performing clerical tasks, and ensuring quality assurance in the laboratory. This role involves following the guidance of the laboratory supervisor. The position is a float between two clinic locations, with flexibility to commit to one if necessary. A typical day includes up to 20 draws.
Key Responsibilities
- Demonstrate accurate blood drawing and timely collection of specimens.
- Independently perform waived and moderate complexity testing, including microscopic analysis of urine sediment, vaginal wet mounts, fungal exams, and ferning tests.
- Properly collect, process, and store patient specimens.
- Perform, evaluate, and document quality assurance and quality control tests.
- Ensure proper documentation and notification of alerts.
- Act as a resource to medical staff regarding specimen collection and laboratory processing, participating in training.
- Follow laboratory policies and procedures, participating in the quality improvement process.
- Ensure compliance with relevant rules, regulations, and standards.
- Handle and dispose of biohazardous material safely and compliantly.
- Stock laboratory supplies, remove expired supplies, and maintain a clean laboratory environment.
- Process billing rejections from contract laboratories.
- Participate in internal quality improvement teams to drive initiatives according to organizational goals and standards.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Current Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist (MA-P) or Phlebotomist Technician Certification.
- Excellent interpersonal and inter-professional skills.
- 6 months or more years of experience.
