Job description

Provides nursing care for all medical cases within the facility, following the guidance of staff veterinarians and senior technicians. Conducts basic diagnostic and screening tests, which may include body weights, Body Condition Scoring (BCS), TB testing, hemoccult testing, urine dipstick analysis, fecal flotation, swab and blood sample collection, and others as requested by veterinarians or senior technicians.

Carries out routine animal procedures, such as handling and restraining rodents, miniature swine, canines, rabbits, and non-human primates (NHP) in their home cages. Administers medications via intramuscular (IM), subcutaneous (SQ), topical, and oral (PO) routes, monitors vital signs (TPR), shaves and preps animals for surgery, applies bandages, provides basic wound care, and evaluates clinical signs in animals under treatment or sedation.

Performs cleaning and preparatory tasks in the animal procedure and technical areas, including cleaning medical instruments, wrapping surgical packs for autoclaving, and cleaning surgical suites or procedure areas after use, as directed by veterinarians or senior technicians.

Calculates medication doses based on veterinarian orders, standard operating procedures (SOP), or study protocols, and may handle controlled substances for planned procedures. Conducts routine quality checks on paperwork and enters data into computer systems as needed, including scheduling departmental tasks.

Assists with inventory management and ordering supplies for the department, and participates in routine cleaning and preparation, such as instrument care, pack wrapping, and cleaning of procedure rooms and carts. May also perform routine maintenance on equipment like x-ray processors, microscopes, and eye wash stations within the veterinary department.
