Job description

Job Summary: We are looking for a meticulous and dedicated Veterinary Research Technician to join our team, focusing on preclinical studies related to diabetes research. This role involves working closely with pig models to gather and analyze data, contributing to vital research initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a background in animal care and research protocols, along with a strong commitment to ethical animal handling.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Animal Care & Handling: Directly care for pigs in the vivarium, ensuring their well-being while collecting data for diabetes research.
  • Data Collection: Conduct blood glucose testing using glucose strips, collecting samples 5+ times per day from 4-5 pigs.
  • Research Support: Assist with the blood glucose monitor project to ensure data accuracy and study success.
  • Anesthesia Monitoring: Monitor pigs under anesthesia, using ventilators and other relevant equipment.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with research staff and veterinarians to achieve study objectives.
  • Weekend Rotation: Participate in a weekend rotation, working one weekend per month as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Associate's degree or higher in Veterinary Technology, Animal Science, or a related field preferred. A high school diploma with relevant experience will also be considered.
  • Experience: At least 1 year of experience in a research or veterinary setting, with practical experience in animal care and data collection.
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in handling and caring for large animals, especially pigs.
    • Experience with anesthesia monitoring and ventilator use.
    • Strong attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
    • Comfort with euthanasia as part of the research protocol.
  • Attributes:
    • Ability to work in a repetitive environment while maintaining high care standards.
    • Strong ethical commitment to animal research and welfare.
    • Team-oriented with effective collaboration skills.

Work Schedule:

  • Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM - 3:00 PM, with occasional extended hours based on study needs.
  • One weekend shift per month as part of a rotation.
