Job description

Research Associate - Large Animals

Do you love working with animals? Do you want to contribute to advancing human health science research? Do you like to work in small teams? We are seeking Research Associates at all levels of experience that have a passion for scientific research. In this position your focus will be working directly with animals in the collection of data and in support of the development of human medicine. You will perform technical procedures to support advancements in pharmaceutical development. In this position you will learn and perfect complex procedures including learning the skills to operate laboratory equipment, specimens collection techniques and data acquisition. We work with many different animal models: mice, rats, non-human primates, swine and canine and you will have the opportunity to become a proficient, highly skilled expert in this field. Multiple shifts available.

What You'll Do Here

  • Follows SOPs and Protocols to perform procedures on study and stock animals, including, but not limited to: clinical observations, food consumptions, body weights, urine collection, administering injectable anesthesia, mating procedures, blood draws (all routes), euthanasia/necropsy, catheter placement, restraint, enrichment, and feeding and food removal.
  • Creates study specific forms/labels, as assigned.
  • Follows written and verbal instruction: Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Protocols, Daily Schedules.
  • Records, enters and reviews raw data, study and facility.
  • Sets up for procedures and maintains ancillaries on study animals, including surgical procedure support (e.g., sterile preparation, anesthesia machine set up & monitoring, and post-surgery recovery).
  • Operates selected laboratory equipment (e.g., glucometer, Harvard pump, digital thermometer, centrifuge, incubator).
  • Monitors and reports changes in animal behavior or health, and problems with animal rooms (e.g., caging, lights, and temperature) to all appropriate personnel.
  • Maintains general cleanliness and organization of work areas.
  • Monitors and reports study changes to Study Director and all appropriate personnel
  • May review and provide input on the creation and revision of SOPs relating to animals, technical procedures and facility issues.
  • Perform and/or assist with veterinary treatments of research and colony animals as assigned.
  • Perform abnormal behavior assessment of colony animals and assist in the animal socialization program, as assigned.
  • May perform husbandry duties.
  • May cross train in other departments.

What You'll Need To Succeed

  • High School Diploma and/or GED required; BS/BA in a scientific discipline preferred.
  • 0-2 years experience working with animals, in research, or in a regulated environment.
  • ALAT certification preferred.
  • The ability to work with Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, Info Path, Access, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Able to adapt easily to new software programs.
  • The ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, software manuals, study documents, and procedure manuals; and the ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • The math skills required include but are not limited to: the ability to understand and utilize appropriate mathematical concepts for calculating and interpreting scientific data.
  • Ability to work cross functionally on process improvements. Demonstrated attention to detail. Ability to multi-task and maintain organization in a fast paced, changing environment. Ability to manage change. Readily adapts to new projects. Positive attitude toward work and co-workers. Be comfortable communicating with all levels of management and employees. Able to identify and resolve problems as they are encountered.
