Job description

Responsibilities:

  • Carry out procedures on study and stock animals in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Protocols, encompassing clinical observations, food intake monitoring, body weight measurements, urine collection, administration of injectable anesthesia, mating procedures, blood sampling (via all routes), euthanasia/necropsy, catheter placement, restraint, enrichment activities, and overseeing feeding and food removal.
  • Generate study-specific forms/labels as directed.
  • Adhere to written and verbal instructions, including SOPs, Protocols, and Daily Schedules. Record, input, and review raw data pertaining to studies and facility operations.
  • Prepare for and support procedures on study animals, including assisting with surgical procedures (e.g., sterile preparation, anesthesia apparatus setup and monitoring, post-surgery care).
  • Operate various laboratory equipment such as glucometers, Harvard pumps, digital thermometers, centrifuges, and incubators.
  • Monitor and report any changes in animal behavior or health, as well as issues within animal rooms (e.g., cage conditions, lighting, temperature) to relevant personnel.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization within work areas.
  • Report any study-related changes to the Study Director and appropriate personnel.
  • Possibly contribute to the development and updating of SOPs related to animal care, technical procedures, and facility management.
  • Assist with veterinary treatments of research and colony animals as required.
  • Conduct assessments of abnormal animal behavior within colonies and participate in animal socialization initiatives as needed.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelors degree in a scientific field preferred.
  • 0-2 years of experience working with animals, in research, or in a regulated environment.
  • Preference for ALAT certification.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, InfoPath, Access, Outlook, and PowerPoint. Ability to quickly learn new software applications.
  • Capability to comprehend and apply instructions from various documents including safety guidelines, operational and maintenance manuals, software guides, study protocols, and procedural manuals.
  • Ability to draft routine reports and correspondence.
  • Essential mathematical skills for calculating and interpreting scientific data.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and maintain order in a dynamic environment.
  • Positive attitude towards work and colleagues. Effective communication with all levels of staff.
