Job description

Job Title: Phlebotomist - Inpatient Setting (ER)

Position Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Phlebotomist to join our clinical laboratory team. In this role, you will perform phlebotomy for blood sample collection and process specimens for clinical laboratory testing. You will also be responsible for performing routine clerical tasks and ensuring accurate documentation and specimen handling. The position requires a strong understanding of patient care across various age groups, including newborns, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. Your work will directly contribute to high-quality patient care in a fast-paced hospital environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform phlebotomy to collect blood specimens for laboratory testing in the ER and other inpatient areas as needed.
  • Organize and prioritize tasks to efficiently manage workload, ensuring timely collection and processing of specimens.
  • Demonstrate expertise in processing specimens for clinical laboratory tests, ensuring accurate identification and following rejection criteria.
  • Document collection information thoroughly and accurately.
  • Perform routine clerical tasks, including using laboratory computers to input data and manage patient information.
  • Prepare and replenish materials, supplies, and reagents required for phlebotomy procedures.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of age-specific care for infants, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients, ensuring appropriate safety measures and communication.
  • Participate in new employee orientation when requested by the Supervisor.
  • Uphold the HPMC mission of "quality care with compassion and respect" in all job functions.

Required Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of phlebotomy experience in a hospital setting.
  • Phlebotomy certification.
  • Strong knowledge of age-specific care and the ability to assess patient needs across various age groups.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, work under pressure, and maintain accuracy.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively with patients and healthcare team members.
  • Punctual and reliable with a commitment to maintaining a consistent schedule.

Schedule/Shift:

  • Full-time, 40 hours per week with rotating weekends.
  • Shifts: AM (5:30 AM - 2:00 PM) or PM (2:00 PM - 10:30 PM), based on departmental need.
  • Schedule provided one month in advance.
