Ophthalmic Technician/Medical Assistant

Job description

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Ophthalmic Technician to join our multi-speciality private ophthalmic group. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in providing cost-effective quality care as part of our patient care team. Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Required).
  • Ophthalmology or Optometry experience: 2 years
  • Open to Medical Assistants with strong back office experience willing to be trained to be an Ophthalmic Technician

Schedule/Shift:

  • 8-hour shift with a 30-minute lunch break.
  • Start times between 7 am and 7:30 am.

Responsibilities:

As an Ophthalmic Technician, you will be responsible for:

  • Performing basic skills, including measuring and recording acuities, lensometry, color vision testing, autorefraction, Amsler grid, evaluation of pupils, keratometry, dilation of pupils, stereoscopic vision testing, basic ocular motility, color plates, basic tonometry, manual blood pressures, basic principles of contact lenses care and cleaning, operation of AED/epipen, and emergency oxygen supplies.
  • Serving as the physician-patient liaison, patient advocate, and educator.
  • Traveling to satellite offices as dictated by the needs of the practice.
  • Confirming the accuracy and reproducibility of data obtained from testing.
  • Completing patient charting, including chief complaint, history of current illness, past ocular history, family history, systemic illnesses, medical doctor, medications, allergies, drug reactions, and social history.
  • Maintaining proper instrument and equipment care and maintenance using microbial control and sterilization techniques.
  • Exercising universal precautions for ocular diseases, general ocular anatomy and physiology, ocular emergencies, and metric conversions.
  • Assisting with in-office minor surgeries and laser surgeries as needed.
  • Accurately completing, updating, and recording clinical documentation.
  • Understanding types, strengths, actions, and complications of drugs commonly used in the ophthalmic practice.
  • Calling prescriptions into pharmacies or by using the E-Rx system as necessary and under physician direction.
  • Continuing advancement of clinical skill sets, including scribing, advanced ocular testing, visual fields, retinal/optic nerve head imaging, A-scans, supply management, and/or triage.
  • Participating in other organizational responsibilities, such as safety committees, wellness programs, training new staff, and other non-clinical functions.

Travel Requirement:

Expected that Ophthalmic Techs travel to 3 offices total, 1 home office, and 2 other offices. Offices include Pittsburgh, Greensburg, Warrendale, Butler, McMurray, Monroeville, Rostraver, Steubenville, Weirton.

Mileage Policy:

Staff are assigned a home office based on their home location and business needs. Mileage reimbursement is based on the difference of mileage from another office to their home office round trip.
