This position is open for part-time OR full-time. Hours of operation are M-F 8-5. Candidates can select the part-time hours.
- Preparing media, reagents, and buffers accordingly with manufacture instructions and Laboratory procedures.
- Receiving and testing patient samples obtained from both internal and external medical staff and providers.
- Determining the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established Laboratory criteria.
- Performing in-house STAT testing including Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR), Wet Prep, Urethral Gram Stains, and Urine pregnancy testing.
- Assisting with patient sample collections, as needed, in patient clinics including performing blood draws via venipuncture and/or finger sticks.
- Using an autoclave.
- Monitor, operate and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality.
- Performing and recording quality controls for all diagnostic testing, incubators, refrigerators, freezers, and sterilization instruments.
- Assisting with quality control of required records for inspections, including Material Safety Data Sheets Maintain.
- Entering patient testing results into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and/or Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Maintaining a safe work environment including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Other duties as determined by management.
The essential functions of this position are:
1. Specimen Testing:
· Molecular-using NAAT method performed on the Panther by Hologic
§ Routine operation of the Panther includes extensive cleaning, reagent preparation, reagent loading, workloads and load list preparation, specimen labeling, specimen loading, reviewing results, release of results, assigning results, preventive maintenance, and performing Quality Controls.
· Serology Testing- Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) test
§ Centrifuging of samples
§ Qualitative Assay Testing
§ Semiquantitative Assay Testing which involves making dilution on Reactive patient samples.
· Culture Testing
§ Incubator use
§ Gram staining
§ Preparing oxidase
· STAT Testing- for immediate in-house specimens
§ RPR, Wet Prep, Gram Stains, Urine testing, and Urine Pregnancy, Rapid HIV testing.
· Beckman Coulter DXH 520 Hematology Analyzer-for Complete Blood Counts (CBC)
· Blood Chemistry Analysis- via Piccolo Analyst
· Blood and Urine
§ Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) testing
§ Urinalysis via dipstick
· PTS diagnostic Hemoglobin A1C testing.
2. Documentation of laboratory results
· Lab Information System (Orchard /Harvest)
· Electronic Medical Record (CureMD)
· NC State Laboratory Clinical/Environmental Lab Results (CELR)
3. Quality Control
· Performed on the stock quality control organisms, media received and prepared, Coulter DXH 520, CBC, TRUST test, cultures for oxidase, and gram stain.
· Preformed on all equipment that is used for laboratory testing.
· Proficiency testing is performed on most test that is performed in the laboratory.
· Monitor and document temperatures on all incubators, refrigerators, freezers, and sterilization of instruments.
4. Clinic/Phlebotomy
· Draw blood by venipuncture or fingerstick in absence of Stat Technologist/Technician or Phlebotomist.
5. Miscellaneous Duties
· Autoclaving
· Medical Waste Management
· Processing and sending specimens via mail and courier
· Reviewing and sorting of patient laboratory results obtained from the State Lab and Other reference Labs to be taken to Medical Records
Education & Experience requirements:
- Two-year Associate's degree in medical technology or a comparable course (ASCP certification preferred)
- Two years of experience as a medical laboratory technician and/or technologist
