Animal Care Technician

Job description

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Perform husbandry tasks for animals including cage change, cash wash, and health monitoring under IACUC standards.
  • Perform daily animal checks to promote animal welfare, including weekends and holidays.
  • Receive animals into the facility.
  • Rodent identification (tattooing, ear tagging, and microchipping).
  • Rodent body weight collection.
  • Assist with colony maintenance related tasks, including weaning, pairing, euthanasia, and sample biopsy for genotyping.
  • Data entry into colony management software.
  • Maintaining weekly, monthly, and annual Vivarium cleaning.
  • Supporting timed feeding.
  • General stocking of cage supplies, and PPE areas.
  • Communicate thoroughly and regularly with staff members.
  • Performs related job duties as required and properly documented.
  • Adhere to, with a strong understanding, standard operating procedures/guidelines regarding personnel and animal safety.

Desired Education and Skills:

  • High School diploma required.
  • ALAT preferred, or ability to achieve ALAT status within 2 years.
  • Laboratory animal experience preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Applications; Word, Excel, Outlook systems.
  • Must be able to work on weekend/holiday schedule for vivarium coverage.
  • Ability to strictly adhere to laboratory methods and SOPs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to follow verbal instructions.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize shifting demands and workload.

  • Needed Skills: IV injections not needed, she's open to greener candidates that have not worked in research, but have been in a vet clinic (avoid explora if possible, it was bought by charles river..they teach bad practices)

  • Need hard worker.

  • Schedules: Can pick either Sun-TH, Tuesday- Saturday

  • Flexible start times. some start at 630am, some at 7a, FT 40 hours

  • Training: Monday-Friday for first few weeks

  • Travel Expense: Mileage between clients, not from home to client or form client to home
