Animal Care Technician

The Animal Care Tech provides basic husbandry services or performs tasks involved in the care, maintenance, and welfare of animals (non-human primates).

What You'll Do Here:

  • Comply with the appropriate safety and study requirements as described in the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and governmental regulations.
  • Comply with appropriate safety and health practices including personal protective equipment and barrier requirements, as applicable.
  • Recognize animal behavior, health status and report to appropriate channels.
  • Perform animal husbandry (cage/room cleaning, feeding/fasting, sanitation, enrichment, etc.) on a regular basis.
  • Operate, maintain, and perform equipment tasks (e.g. pressure washer, autoclave, cage movement) on a regular basis.
  • Observe and report any aberrations in animal room environments (room temperature, humidity, lighting, ventilation, vermin, etc.).
  • Perform general facility cleaning, stocking, and inventory.
  • Prepare rooms, sanitize (cage change), and repair as needed (e.g. waterline hoses, lixit, animal cages).
  • Receive, and distribute animals for isolation, study assignment or consolidation.
  • Verify proper function of automatic watering systems.
  • Handle biohazardous materials per Standing Operating Procedure ("SOP").
  • Introduction to capture and restraint using net.
  • Perform socialization of compatible animals.
  • Install and remove activity tunnels.
  • Record assigned procedures on Animal Room Husbandry Records.
  • Record routine animal care procedures into animal health jackets and/or study notebooks. Introduction to administration of IM injections, TB testing, health observations and weighing for technical skills development/training.

What You'll Need to Succeed:

  • High School Diploma or GED (or equivalent).
  • This is an entry level position and previous animal experience would be beneficial.
  • Basic math and computer skills.
  • Ability to effectively comprehend and communicate (verbal and written) in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people in a fast-paced environment. Positive attitude toward work and co-workers.
  • AALAS certification preferred.
